The art of Tang Soo Do is a traditional Korean martial arts style, whose history can be traced back for nearly 2000 years. The name "Tang Soo Do" in English, means "The way of the T'ang, or Chinese hand", implying that it is an open-handed fighting style, derivative of T'ang -period Chinese martial arts.

The Name of our Art, Tang Soo Do, is represented by the following Chinese characters



TANG
This character represents the T'ang Dynasty of China. It refers to a period when Korea's and China's history was shared.  It implies the origin of our Art


SOO
This is the character for "Hand", in Chinese, Korean as well as Japanese.  This character is used to signify hand, fist, strike, punch, defense, etc.


DO
This character signifies way, road, method. It is used to represent "Way of Life" or "Art"

Putting this together, "Tang Soo Do" in English means "The Way or Art of the T'ang, or Chinese hand", implying that it is an open-handed fighting style, derivative of and influenced by T'ang -period Chinese martial arts.
